There is a mystic attached to writer's earnings -- as there is in any profession that gets lump sum earnings -- but there's also a social taboo to speaking about it. And more than just the usual money-talk taboo. In other industries that are highly public (think sports) we always hear what the pitcher or point guard gets signed for. Not so much in the world of novels.
